A Filipino Celebration of Culture and Independence in Vallejo

If it’s June, it must be time for a celebration in Vallejo’s vibrant Filipino community.

Families and friends celebrate will once again honor their rich heritage and history in the city with “Philippine Cultural Month.” The four-week-long fete, kicking off on Saturday, features concerts, martial arts demonstrations, exhibits, dancing, vendors, and more at locations throughout Vallejo.

Making the local events even more meaningful and significant is the fact that several U.S. Navy ships set sail from Mare Island Naval Shipyard and crossed the Pacific to fight the Spanish at the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898. Shortly thereafter, the Spanish surrendered, and General Emilio Aguinaldo, the Philippine leader, declared independence from Spain and raised the first Philippine flag on June 12, 1898.

The Vallejo Philippine Cultural Committee, a program of the Filipino Community of Solano County, Inc., plans and organizes the events. Starting things off this year will be a “Makers and Music” day on Saturday, with live music, DJs and local small business vendors, all at Suite Treatments, 3729 Sonoma Boulevard in Vallejo.
